Crazy Speed! Samsung SSD Awesomeness – RAID0 Of 24 SSDs

5 Comments 10 March 2009

samsung-logoHow fast can SSD transfer? Currently, Samsung holds a really crazy program to test their SSDs, that’s called Samsung SSD Awesomeness. They have used 24 SSDs (Total Capacity: 6TB) and built a RAID0 group. As you know, RAID0 is parellel transfering, so the speed can be very fast, but what’s the accuracy values of the several test? Let me tell you:

This test is build on Intel Skulltrail V8 Platform, two Intel Quad CPUs, two Radeon HD 4870 X2 Graphic Cards and 4GB DDR2-800MHz FB-DIMM RAM. Also there are powerful power supplies: 1000W*2! They built 24 SATA Sockets on RAID Card, and these sockets are the main forces of the whole PC.

After 24 hours, they finished, and the speed can be successfully booted. And then, it’s the crazy transfer test…

Here is a Video from YouTube, you can get the results easily.

Results Summary:

1. Copy files: Average Transfer Speed is 2010MB/s, more than 2GB/s!

2. Open 6 Microsoft Word Documents took only 0.5 seconds.

3. Run 53 different programs randomly? Only took 18.09s.

4. Defrag the huge 6TB Storage Device took only a moment.

5. Empty the trash with 700 files or 5.6GB do not need to wait.

6. Transfer a DVD Rip is as fast as drop a DVD to the ground from the second storey.

7. Crysis can be really wonderful under 1920×1200 revolution and best quality.

8. Just shake the SSDs and jump with it didn’t affect the transfer!

The 8 results are really terrible and crazy, right? That proved that SSD has better performance and stability than HDD. What do think about HDD and SSD in the future, leave your comment below.

SSD and RAID technology combined.. That would be awesome.. As far as i learned from class, during the age of hard disks parallel data transfer is not perfect due to synchronization problems.. SSD have resolved it. Good!!

I just want to see its price fall. I am eager to get one SSD for myself.

@Jon. Not really, after more than 60 years we’re still stuck with the same basic Von Neumann architecture.
