Windows 7 may be generating some positive buzz, but Jack Wallen remains skeptical. In fact, he says it’s only a matter of time before Linux takes its rightful spot at the top of the OS heap.
Yes, I am a typical Linux fan, but I feel that this post is really worthless for me. Actually, the comparision between Windows and Linux cannot prove anything because every user have their own choices. Let’s find out the comparisons which he stated.
1. Inconsistent Windows releases & Consistent Linux releases
He stated that Windows do not have many improvements in newer and newer versions, and even mocked at Microsoft that provides rubbish releases without useful new features. Â I don’t think he is correct, eventually every Windows version has very big improvements. I personally don’t like Microsoft, but I can see this fact. Why Windows Vista and Windows Me are jokes? That can be revolutions!
2. Continuing Windows price hikes & Stable Linux “prices”
Of course, this fact is correct. However, we cannot compare the prices if they provide different support. The products of Windows include services and solutions such as MSDN, Microsoft Knowledgebase and even some services for enterprise users. What about Linux? Without any money, the folks at Linux provides nothing. Also, companies like RedHat or Sun Microsystem offer good services and solutions for Linux users, but what’s the cost? The only fact I know is that it’s “Much more than Windows Products” .
3. Windows hardware incompatibility & Linux hardware compatibility
Eventually, Linux has good core that support most hardwares with no drivers. However, Windows can support better with drivers. Actually, hardware corporations will provide Windows drivers but not Linux drivers. How can we compare the hardware compatibility? The environments and ecosystems of two operating systems are extremely different. Users will only notice the result, Windows with drivers and Linux without drivers have the same hardware compatibility!
4. Windows promises & Linux transparency
Microsoft is a business software corporation, but Linux is a big open source community. Of course Microsoft have to promise customers and Linux can choose not to care much, that’s because of their different roles. Although Microsoft cannot do as well as our imagination, the products are still pretty good. How can he said “Vista was going to be the operating system you would never notice. Instead, Vista refused to NOT let you notice.”? I really cannot understand his tones.
5. Feature comparison
He laughed at Microsoft again, actually Windows and Fedora gave different angles of new features. Windows is a full operating system with GUI and Applications, but Fedora team notices only the operating system cores. Microsoft was trying to let users to know their new features in a clear way. Therefore, this comparison was definitely wrong!
6. Hardware requirements
This comparison is funny, Windows requires good hardware but Linux doesn’t. That can only prove that Windows have more complicated core than Linux. Computers all tools for us, we spend higher prices for better computers. He also stated that some 1990s’ computers can run Fedora very well, that’s correct, but I don’t want to see that Windows is designed for new computers and Linux is designed for old computers. As well, his view about the netbook and Windows is fully wrong either, who said that Netbook do not have enough power to run Windows 7? I have the experience, Windows 7 is perfect for netbooks!
I do not like Microsoft, but after reading this post, I think we all have to respect Microsoft. Anyway, only users and time will tell the truth.

Triumph? Not likely any time soon. However it may gain more of a legit mainstream existence. Maybe the 5-10% that Apple has. Apple will probably go up to around 20% and Windows will be around 60-70%.
I have 2 PCs a Mac and a Linux machine at home. Linux has a looooong way to go. Hardware compatibilities are way worse than Windows and Mac. Installing software can still be tricky. Stuff just does not work like the commercial OS choices.
I desperately want it to succeed, but every time I give it a chance, it still seems not ready for prime time.
People just use Windows, it works – not always, but it works – and they don’t see the reason to switch. What Linux needs are commercials. However, there is no money for commercials, I don’t even see future in the Linux Foundation’s contest.
You need to grow up with Linux, or love it. The average user doesn’t want to switch and learn Linux.
1st reason I do not use Linux is because I love the comfort of Windows. Windows crash sometime but it is good. Well I can hang Linux as well. I hanged my college Linux PC 4 times in half an hour doing simple C programming.
2nd reason I do not use Linux because it is free (well most are)
3rd reason Windows is Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 but Linux has so many variety. I am bad at deciding.
4th reason Hardware requirement for both Linux and Windows is same. Those who give this reason suck.
5th reason Windows equipped with many additional features. Did you know that XP has DVD burning feature (XP came when DVD were just born). Many different programs can be used with it.
6th People got unsatisfied with Vista because they want to use Windows. People Love Windows and it will still rule.
7th Hardwares are made to be compatible with windows. Really all good hardware works with Windows. Linux adapts to hardware not that it is fully compatible with them.
Well it good to see that you do not agree with that post. Do not think that I am a full Windows Fan, I go with what is good.
I posted the above point because I wanted people to know some facts.
Fact: If you're a tech junkie, use Linux. Cost for support? What support? Since when did geeks have to beg (pay) those bigshot companies for help?
Option 1: Solve the problem yourself to save your pride.
Option 2: What do you think those kind forum folks are for?
Sad Fact 2: Majority of the 'user' population are NOT geeks. Well? You got it. Linux will never bag the victory on the OS market – not until the day when geeks rule the world.
Summary: Technically, Linux has already triumphed over Windows, mainly in the aspects of security. Windows 7 seems a notch more secure as compared to its preceders, but then again it costs a bomb. For me at least. Why should I pay if I can have Linux + self maintenance for free?
In terms of market popularity however, Windows/Mac > Linux big time. Sure, most enterprise use Linux for servers, but what about individual users who are not that adept in computing? Back to you, Microsoft.
