Another 15-Year-Old’s View on Twitter & Media

8 Comments 15 July 2009

Recently, a 15-year-old by the name Mathew Robinson wrote an article named “How teens consume media”, which got published by Morgan Stanly. The article talks about the new media and how teens are changing, and is pretty accurate.

The key points of the article are:

  • Teens use “new” media alot
  • Teens are not likely to pay for stuff
  • Print media is disliked by teens
  • Most people do not connect HD boxes to HD-ready TVs
  • Teens don’t usually use twitter, as texting is expensive
  • Teens like touch screen devices
  • Mid-range phones such as Sony Erricsons are preferred

How Teenagers Consume Media

Now, we must keep in mind this article is written from experience- not research, and thus, differs from region to region.

However, the following should be universally applied:

teenagers do not use twitter. Most have signed up to the service, but then just leave it as they release that they are not going to update it (mostly because texting twitter uses up credit, and they would rather text friends with that credit).

Really? I know no one cares about my twitter, thank you. However, the service is still being used by many teenagers like us especially the internet-savvy ones. Really, do people really text to tweet? Why do you want to spent money when you can tweet free- with wifi. Twitter is somewhere for your friends and you to chat, and heck, I will give facebook the props it deserve, but really, where else can you really talk to internet celebs?

All jokes aside, it is surprising to think that Companies as big as Morgan Stanley to care about kids’ remarks. I wish more companies will actually hear remarks coming from us. After all, most of us are IT savvy.

Hi guys, what do you think of Plurk? I noticed some teenagers prefer it to Twitter probably because of the 'Karma' popularity point system.

Why Pluck? Sure it is a good platform, but everyone's using twitter. Its like friendster and facebook.
