Top 100 Most Visited Articles on Wikipedia in 2009

70 Comments 31 August 2009

It’s pretty amazing that Wikipedia exists at all, let alone that it has over 17.8 million articles in more than two hundred languages. Millions of people around the world use the free web-based encyclopedia daily, be it bloggers researching on a particular software, students working on their projects, teachers using it as an educational tool and the list goes on. Gradually, the encyclopedia that anyone can edit has become a household name. It’s not just its size or popularity, but also the way Wikipedia has evolved that makes it simple. Thousands of Web users volunteer their time and knowledge to help fulfill the community’s goal of providing every person in the world with a high-quality encyclopedia in their native language.

The non-commercial online encyclopedia which was launched on January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, has just surpassed the 10 million registered users mark, hitting a milestone. One of the world’s most visited sites on the Web, Wikipedia represents the future of publishing, and every company that produces information – from publishers to data providers – should be scared.

Here, we round up this year’s “Top 100 Most Visited Pages on Wikipedia”, according to statistics from Wikistics, a site which grabs data from Wikimedia Squid access-log stream and ranks them based on the number of visits. I was rather dismayed by the results. Surprisingly, what exactly people are looking for on Wikipedia is actually Wiki! Besides that, I didn’t know that people love reading the “obituaries”. ‘Deaths in 2009‘ was ranked #8, with close to 50,000 visits.

The King of Pop made it to the #3 placing and United States President Barack Obama was one of the most-viewed topics (#7). Social websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter were ranked #5. #10 and #13 respectively.

  3. pesho says:

    So Amazing
    Thanks

  4. the list given below is quite wonderful.

  5. macewan says:

Wondering if this means the readership is mostly young males… or adults wanting to get their laugh on.

  6. nikuniku says:

When it comes to penis enlargement or marire penis most people tend to buy different accessories which really work (some better than others) but I don't get it with the pills. Would people really expect to grow their equipment with pills ?

  7. Deano says:

favicon.ico at number 4! Wow Obama is losing his poularity! Could that be a glinch of the software, I'd be surprised if that many people had even heard of such a specialised thing.

  8. Name says:

Basically this shows me that the readership of wikipedia is male! Scifi and Sex…

  9. Prakash Murthy says:

Check out Seth Godin's take on this list! http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/09...

  10. I would have thought that many of the most visited articles would have been more on the academic side, but after looking at the list, it makes sense that these hot topics would be searched more and lead to a Wikipedia page for information on what they are.

  11. dmoore0021 says:

Pleased to see that pornography made it into the top 100 – was worried there for a minute…

  12. Casey says:

That is some crazy stuff right there.

  13. Name says:

Transformers 2 redirects to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, so they should be combined. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen would then have 53,237 page hits and rank #6.

  14. dips says:

the most important fact to be remembered is, the average person googles for something and then ends up in Wikipedia. So, 'wiki' coming up as top result is not surprising at all. Neither are the other search results. Imagine googling for “michael Jackson, death, 2009″ – you will either end up in wikipedia for MJ, or Wikipedia result for 'deaths in 2009″. Voila!

  15. max power says:

I did google for “michael Jackson, death, 2009″ (with and without quotes) and there was not a single wikipedia link on the first page of results.

  16. rizache says:

Its an English list. Nothing for other versions?

  17. sup says:

    Vagina: 22,295
    Penis: 20,076
“Statistics show that although the vagina is still the most popular when it comes to reproductive organs, we can note a drastic increase in the demand for penis, which has overtaken last year's favourite, Masturbation, by almost 300 hits. This clearly goes to show that people have realized they need better knowledge about just what it is they're dealing with, before attempting any serious fapping.”

  18. clutterbells says:

Nice list. Interesting how much popular culture and as such the people with the most exposure anyway are researched on Wikipedia.

  19. Simon says:

Very much doubt that wiki is the most viewed page – probably just the most common search string, which probably just means people are typing in, let's say, “Beatles wiki” as a search term, rather than simply “the Beatles”. I've done it. You've probably done it. And according to the numbers it looks like everyone else has too. But as many times as I've typed wiki into a search field as one of the terms, never once have I visited the “wiki” wikipedia page. I'm not sure it even exists…Just checked. It does. So strike that last. But I stand by the other stuff!

  20. bestpenisenlargement says:

I am Very thank full the owner of this blog. Because of this blog is very imformative for me, – Best Penis Enlargement – We list and review the Top Penis Enlargement in market

  21. samorchard says:

Some surprises which is interesting but think it is funny how many references to porn there are. The industry is huge – I did a search for penis enlargement just because of the comments here and the relation to the post and in google there are 3290000 results – so the popularity of the subject is huge

  22. LisaMonroe says:

I must admit that I thought the most visited articles wouldve been scientifical, but I guess I am wrong looking at the top.Michael Jackson on the third place and I guess he entered the top 1 mounth ago.
