Tewspaper: Crowdsourced News Via Twitter and Social Media
Posted on August 25, 2009 | No Comments
Tewspaper, an online newspaper without writers, has launched with coverage of five major metropolitan cities - Baltimore, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. Tewspaper scours social media websites such as Twitter and filters messages down to breaking news. One of the local sites, Baltimore News, brings algorithmically filtered news to people in Tewspaper's home town.
Baltimore News via Social Media
Tewspaper is neither endorsed nor sponsored by Twitter or other social media websites; the company uses publicly available APIs to connect with social media sites and find relevant data. One of Tewspaper's innovations is a system of filtering through the obscure and finding the relevant news on social media sites. For example, Twitter alone has over 2 billion messages, and is growing by thousands of messages per minute. Tewspaper makes it easy to find out what is happening now, in an organized, succinct, and accessible fashion. It is an ideal way for the Internet generation, who text and tweet, to view the news at their rapidly moving pace.

Twitter’s Trademark “Tweet” was Actually Rejected Just Hours after it had been Revealed
Posted on August 21, 2009 | No Comments
A month ago, the folks at Twitter had applied a trademark for "tweet" and this had sparked off controversy among developers who were worried that the trademark would affect their applications consisting of the word "Tweet". Biz Stone, one of the co-founders of Twitter, said "we have applied to trademark Tweet because it is clearly attached to Twitter from a brand perspective" in a blog post dated July 1. Standing from a developer's perspective, I heaved a sigh of relief and rejoice with my other fellow friends working in the app development sector.
What made surprised me was that the USPTO (US Patent and Trademarks Office) rejected the trademark application just hours after Stone's post and on the very same day. According to their records (#77715815), Twitter filed for a trademark on April 16, 2009 and was turned down on July 1, 2009.

Hackers Prey on Facebook Friends by Spinning Yarn about being Stranded Overseas & Ask for Money
Posted on August 21, 2009 | No Comments
Got a Facebook message from a friend claiming to have been stranded overseas and asking for money to cover his hotel bill or air ticket home? Beware. His account could have been used by hackers to make such an appeal. A couple of years ago, hackers were breaking into e-mails accounts and using them to claim that the account-holder was stranded overseas and needed money wired over. Now, Facebook accounts are fast beoming a preferred target.
Mr Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at information technology security and control firm Sophos, said it is "quite a common scam at the moment" because hackers can easily contact all the account-holder's friends and lace the message with loads of personal information gleaned from the account. Sometimes, the scammers wait for a reply before giving instructions; at other times, they ask outright for the money to be transferred via money-transfer services company Western Union. IT security specialists say such scams are happening worldwide, but no one is tracking the numbers and most cases go unreported.

50+ Really Cool Twitter ‘Fail Whale’ Images/Graphics
Posted on August 20, 2009 | No Comments
When Twitter experiences an outage, users will see the “fail whale†error message created by Australian artist and designer Yiying Lu. It's a whimsical illustration of red birds using nets to hoist a whale from the ocean. The message reads: “Too many tweets! Please wait a moment and try again.â€
She didn't expect that her work would become a 'hit' after uploading her illustration to iStockphoto in July 2007 until Biz Stone, one of the founders of Twitter happened to stumble across her image a year later. During that time, Twitter was experiencing regular service outrages and this had spurred Stone on to find a suitable and cute downtime image. He purchased the iStockPhoto's standard license, which grants a perpetual worldwide right for such online uses.

Posted on August 19, 2009 | No Comments
With regards to Twitter's exponential growth, an increasing number of spammers, bots or even hackers tried to make use of the world's most popular micro-blogging platform to either publish malicious links that will lead you to phishing sites or promote their products incessantly. These make up of a relatively large percentage of the total number of tweets posted by users. As URL shortening services like Bit.ly and TinyURL dominate the entire Twitter community, hackers have started to abuse these URLs in tweets and retweets to spread their malware and scareware.
In an unfortunate incident whereby one of your friends' account has been abused, the hacker may spread malicious links. Most probably you would trust him or her but when you clicked on it, you're being directed to a "dirty" site. Here's a tool which helps Twitter users browse safely comes in really handy.
