We Work Hard, Yet Some People Don’t Appreciate It

12 Comments 17 September 2009

TechXav’s young and adroit bloggers spend hours daily racking our brains and writing articles encircling around the social web. Sometimes, we would have to sacrifice our leisure time, be it indulging in our online alias or watching television programmes, to share our knowledge with tech-savvy adults around the world. We all share a common goal – to excel in the technology sector when we grow up. As tech enthusiasts, we aim to become top-notch bloggers, tech entrepreneurs or even financial investors.

Many readers on TechXav are impressed by our amazing feat in the blogosphere and sing praises. However, there are some people who don’t seem to appreciate our work. One of them is Artful Dodger (his nickname), the founder and editor of Jowki.

A self-proclaimed “15-Year-Old Tech Blogger” from the United Kingdom, he violated TechXav’s copyright privacy by copying several articles. His blog – Jowki, which is hosted on IGXHOST, contains articles that are grabbed from our tech blog without any attribution or credit.

Here are the screenshots I have taken as evidence (click on the images to enlarge):

*Note: The following links to Jowki may be ‘dead’ as the author has removed his posts due to copyright infringement.

Comment:

He said he was “on OfficeSnapshots and came across these images of the big time companies out there such as Google and Yahoo. I couldn’t resist re-posing them so here they are.” What a joker! He was just merely pressing CTRL+C and CTRL+V. That’s all. Who did the hard work of finding all these images? It was us!

Comment:

All the photos of Facebook’s new office posted in Jowki were in the exact order as TechXav’s. It was copied verbatim without any attribution or credit to either TechXav or Office Snapshots. Although he did include one or two short sentences of his personal opinions, but this doesn’t rule out the fact that he was infringing our copyright privacy.

Both screnshots may look different but on closer look, you would notice that the description and images are very similar. Yes, the description had been rewritten slightly but the main points are still there.

He had changed the title, probably because ours was simply too long. Yes, he did altered some parts of the post but again, the main concepts and phrases were the same.

I, Xavier Lur, representing TechXav, had sent an e-mail, warning Artful Dodger to remove the posts which he had copied immediately. However, this was the reply I received:

Hello Dr. Joker

This email is regarding your hilarious comment on my blog, www.jowki.com.

First of all I would like to say a few things. I was not “wholesaling”
your articles and I did not copy them. They were completely rewritten
and I felt that they did not require a link back.

Secondly, you must be joking about removing them all immediately right?
ROFL… If I was to tell you the truth I’d say that I think you are a
retard but since I’m a nice guy I’ll just assume your were either:

1) High at the time of writing this comment
2) You had an extremely alcohol fuelled night out and you were drunk.
3) or maybe you just are a retard.

I encourage you to contact IGXHost about this and even contact GoDaddy.
Please don’t feel disappointed though :)

Please don’t feel offended if I publish this in full on my blog for my
readers’ entertainment and I feel you need some credit for it also :)

Thank you for your entertainment,
*Artful Dodger*

/PS: Nice Inggeris. “Wholesale” ANDA JOKER!/

He claimed to be innocent and denied any wrongdoings despite the fact that the screenshots above prove he was violating the copyright laws. As such, I have contacted his web host and domain registrar regarding this issue. Hope they could help me solve this crucial problem as soon as possible!

  1. Stealing is stealing, internet or not. Boo to Jowki.

I'm a big fan of TechXav. I don't appreciate it, either. Blogs like Lifehacker will sometimes “re-blog” by writing a summary of the original post and linking to it. This is OK because I'm sure they ask permission from the original writer. After all, they're writing a summary and driving readers to the original writer's blog. The guys at TechXav are awesome. I'm sure they'd allow that. This whole copy and pasting business needs to stop, though. Oh, and Jawki… Get a new theme! You don't deserve that Digg-esque theme! LOL

Please allow me to clarify something. I said “I don't appreciate it, either.” This was a mistake. What I meant was… I don't appreciate people copying posts from TechXav.

Xavier, good for you to call him out on this matter. He needs a public undressing. Hopefully you can get this matter resolved soon!

Poor thing never had a good up-bringing…..so he resorts to stealing blogs, women and stuff from other people.Don't blame him for his attitude in life to steal his way up,I would blame his family, his school and his friends for recognizing him.He does not know the very word of ethics,so help him God………

  7. Simon Liew says:

I'm so sorry this happen to your site. We are actually facing copyright issues everywhere, just that there is no enforce law to protect our rights. Unless we taking legal action against the other parties.

  8. ytz says:

Please don't be too occupied with such people. This is just part and parcal of the internet culture. Nothing much can be really done to change such people. But you will always have the support of your loyal readers, including me!

  9. Nwaz A says:

At 15 one can innocently ignore legalities in such case once the attention is drawn the person will surely say a sorry and make the changes that is totally understandable, and one must appreciate the gentlemanly gesture and be magnanimous ignore and move on as we all go through this sometime or the other when we venture new

i am a mom to and i know how parenting matters over here with so much available on the offline world …ethics is there or not there a parent must find time to look into this , but well each one to their own …all have their limitations and kids too not necessary listen .so this debate is best left out for now

But to reply with such arrogance is something we need not take it prove it and ask for an explanation you owe it to yourself first and then to all ,one thinks offline one can do what they want and the person across the globe is a joker who will not be able to do a damn this hurts ,

inform the institution he is with let them know , just saying he is a looser? oh no no you are giving me courage to do theft again? answer with that arrogance again? theft is theft and theft of hard work and creativity aches , really aches …

Dont just ignore and feel you are some Mahatma ..take the bull by the horn this time please and you are not alone…and you are right that is might
