Apparently, Facebook Checks Where You’re Logging In From

4 Comments 30 October 2009

I’m pretty sure most of you guys aren’t aware that Facebook actually tracks the location you’re logging in from, and even adds an extra layer of security to protect your account if a hacker from an unfamiliar location manages to correctly guess your username and password. Well, I didn’t know about that too until I stumbled across Ed Parsons‘ screenshot taken from his Mac. On a recent business trip to Uganda to attend the AfricaGIS Conference, the Google’s Geospatial Technologist was prompted to enter his birthday to confirm he is the owner of the account.

This is the same method implemented by credit card companies to track the location of cardholders to cut down on fraud.

  1. Hi there! Wow…that hasn't happened to me yet, and I can imagine that to some people it would seem to be a bother, but I think it's a GREAT idea! You can't imagine how many times people have tried to charge things on my credit cards fraudulently–and I have NO IDEA where they have gotten my credit card information, either. I applaud Facebook or anyone that takes extra security measures, because it bothers me that we can't even get sales clerks to look at our faces or signatures when we're RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM at the store, making purchases. We could be thieves and they wouldn't even know it because they don't care enough to check. I always say, “Aren't you going to check my signature to see if it matches or my face to see if I look like the picture on the credit card (if there is one)? You're SUPPOSED to, you know.” They usually get all embarrassed and say, “Oh yeah, I was going to, but I forgot.” Uh-huh…yeah–RIGHT!
Thanks for the great article and keep up the good work! ~Cynde
