iPad To Do Phone Calls? [VIDEO]

1 Comment 05 March 2010

A small piece of interesting information has been given off by the iPad SDK. Previously the iPhone 3.2 SDK was rumored that the iPhone and iPad might have a “video chat function“. And now it seems like the iPad has the “ability” to make emergency calls. The guys over at Gumball Tech have enabled a passcode lock on the SDK by entering incorrect passwords for 5 times. This enabled the emergency call function to be activated, as shown in the image above. It’s still unclear why Apple has included the emergency call function in the iPad SDK. It might not be seen in the real iPad though. It could have to do with the FCC regulations that wireless devices, such as the iPad, must be able to make emergency calls.

Why The iPad Is Not Going To Revolutionize Web Browsing

Apple products may be overpriced, but you got to admit that they are the absolute best at marketing - from the Stevenotes to the zen-like simplicity. Their marketing team makes any Apple product seems like a dream. Just look at the PC vs Mac Ads. You will notice the funnier actor (John Hodgeman AKA PC) does all the acting, while the Mac just sits there and makes fun of PC's problems. I use a Macbook, own a iPod touch, and come from perhaps the most Apple-obsessed school in the world. I should think the iPad is awesome. However, it is simply an upsized version of the iPod touch - nothing more. I probably would have prefer a Netbook that supports flash and runs on a proper OS. I love my iPod touch, but to use it to surf the web is like trying to make a sandwich with my feet. It's possible, but not very fun. I hate clicking on buttons accidentally when I am scrolling. If you think the iPad is gonna perform like a keyboard and mouse, you are in for a shock. Mobile sites? It's a tablet - it should not use a condensed version of the full webpage. Yet, I have a feeling that Facebook will get another dedicated multitouch webpage - not the actual Facebook.com we use on our computers.

iGotaBigAssPocket: Jeans For The iPad

2 Comments 13 February 2010

Unlike the iPhone or iPod Touch, you simply can't slip Apple's iPad tablet into your chest pocket or handbag. Maybe you'll need a new pair of jeans that comes with a big ass pocket. The iGotaBigAssPocket jeans concept, created by the guys over at OhNo!Doom, ensures that you're able to carry the iPad without any hassle by slipping the device into your one massive ass pocket. A couple of weeks ago, we shared a comic about the different ways you will carry your iPad. Some of them sounds too unrealistic, especially the arc reactor chest clamp. So how do you intend to carry the 9.7-inch sleek gadget that weighs 0.68 kg or 1.5 pounds?

How I Wish The iPad Could Look Like This

Patrycjusz Brzezinski has designed a tablet concept that is so close to what became the iPad, yet so very much more better. Featuring a sleek hardware of just 7mm in thickness, the MacView has a 1152×720 LED touchscreen display and dimensions of 15 x 24 cm. Unlike the iPad which a single slab of aluminum and glass that looks like a large iPhone, Brzezinski's MacView is made up of a light and sturdy outer carbon shell. What's impressive is that it even comes with an additional slide panel that displays a full-sized virtual keyboard when pulled out. Some more treasures you can find in MacView include a massive 4GB RAM and 1TB SSD. The sleek device even runs on the Mac OS X operating system (although it would be better if it's powered on the iPhone OS because of its simplicity). Well, all these specifications (especially the 1TB SSD) will definitely cost a bomb but at least its interface is aesthetically pleasing. Steve Jobs should have hired Brzezinski, and probably turns his tablet concept into a real one for the iPad second generation.

4 Interesting Comics About The iPad

No Comments 03 February 2010

Ever since the launch of the Apple's new product -- the iPad, both Nitrozac and Snaggy from The Joy of Tech have been working on quite a number of interesting and funny comics about the tablet, which has received mixed responses from the public. The iPad has several drawbacks that disappoint Apple fanboys and fangirls. For example, it doesn't have a camera, lack of Flash support, no multitasking (which means that you can't listen to Lady Gaga's Poker Face while sending an e-mail), no USB ports, etc. On the other hand, it's sleek, has a reasonable price, and is powered by the iPhone OS, which allows users to download iPhone apps into the iPad without worrying much about compatibility issues.

The iPad May Be Getting A Camera After All

3 Comments 02 February 2010

Just like the iPod Touch, Apple's new iPad doesn't have a camera and this is one of the major drawbacks that made Apple fanboys and fangirls think twice before purchasing the slim and gorgeous tablet. Apparently, rumors suggesting that the iPad will come with a camera seems to be a reality. Mission Repair received their first shipment of the iPad and found something bizarre. Ryan from the repair company has posted images of what is supposedly the iPad outer frame, and he tried to place a camera from a Unibody Macbook into the empty space to see if it fits well. And it does! Hooray, the iPad may be getting a camera after all!

Apple Makes $208 For Each $499 iPad Sold

4 Comments 02 February 2010

Before the iPad was first announced at the Apple event on January 27th, analysts claim that it will come with an introductory price of $1,000. However, to the dismay of many Apple fans, it has an unbelievable retail price of just $499. You may think that Apple will not make much from the sale of the iPad, but Broadpoint AmTech's analyst Brian Marshall proved us wrong. Although the exact specifications of Apple's new iPad have not been revealed, but Marshall puts the estimated cost to produce the 16GB iPad (Wi-Fi version) at $207.50, suggesting a relatively high profit margin on a per device basis for the California-based tech juggernaut. Meanwhile, the 64GB model, which cost $829, will generate profits of $446 per unit when the device becomes available in the market (March 2010). These translate to a 42.9 per cent and 54 per cent gross margin respectively, giving Apple a lot of room to play with the price in the future. The calculations were based on the going rate for component parts, manufacturing cost and built-in warranty repair costs, disregarding costs needed for research and development, software development, marketing, shipping, etc.
